Active voice is a sentence construction where the subject performs the action — producing more direct, energetic, and readable prose compared to passive voice.

Active voice is the default grammatical construction in English where the subject of the sentence performs the action described by the verb.
Active: The researcher analyzed the data. Passive: The data was analyzed by the researcher.
In active sentences, the actor comes first. This typically produces shorter, more direct sentences.
Why Active Voice Is Generally Preferred¶
- Shorter: Active constructions use fewer words for the same information
- Clearer: Subject → verb → object follows natural English processing order
- More confident: Active sentences commit to who did what; passive often obscures the actor
